ELSEWHERES AS EXPERIENCES OF (BE)LONGING
Research in this area emerged through collective dialogues about how movement cultures are similarly (but also differently) exclusionary. Sharing our experiences with the ways mainstream movement spaces ignore and erase our bodies/minds (as well as the bodies/minds of others that have been pushed to the margins), we collectively elucidate the relationships between ongoing systems of oppression (e.g., settler colonialism, white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, (neo)imperialism), while simultaneously demonstrating how we might use our experiences within these systems to imagine something new, something else, altogether.
Artistic Rendering
This artistic rendering is a customized painting of a blue feather with a colourful sun, plants, waves and stars woven throughout. It was created by Rachel Mishenene. Rachel is an Anishinaabe-kwe, with mix of French heritage. She is blood born to Mishkeegogamang First Nation and was adopted, as a child, by the Waboose and O’Keese family of Eabametoong First Nation, of which she is a member.
Rachel has created over 40 customized feathers. Each feather has its own story and represents the journey of individuals who shared with her their lived-experiences and dreams. She meets with individuals one-on-one, in-person or the phone, and listens to their stories with much respect and attention through an interview. During or after the interview, images will come to Rachel that relate to what was being shared, and these images are captured in the feather.
This particular feather is based on Rachel's reading of the academic article “Awakening to elsewhere: Collectively restorying emobodied experiences of (be)longing.” Rachel also met with three of authors when creating this feather. During the conversation, the research was brought to life through the storying of their experiences.
